The women that do our beautiful weaving of organic cotton have taken this art form on as a newly formed skill. They are trained in these skills and then provided with employment as a means of independence and empowerment to be able to support themselves and their children.
Many of the women from this weaving unit are from the Dalit community. Despite the caste system having been formally diffused, many prejudices still remain and in rural communities the caste system is still prevalent. The Dalit community (meaning oppressed) or as Mahatma Gandhi referred to them, the Harijans (Children of God) are also known as the untouchables. They have historically been outcasts in the Indian caste system, but with the training and employment provided in weaving they can now support themselves and their family.
